Banyak ajaran Islam yang dalam pelaksanaannya semakin melenceng dari apa yang telah disuratkan dalam Al-Qur’an maupun Al-Hadits. Tak tinggal diam, Ahmad Dahlan mulai secara perlahan menyadarkan masyarakat sekitar mengenai kesalahan yang telah mereka lakukan.

Tentu saja, merubah sesuatu hal

yang telah menjadi semacam adat di dalam sebuah kelompok bukanlah hal yang mudah untuk dilakukan. Ahmad Dahlan sendiri sempat mendapatkan kecaman dari seorang kyai penjaga tradisi, Kyai Penghulu Kamaludiningrat (Slamet Rahardjo), bahkan sering dituding sebagai seorang kyai yang sesat. Namun atas dukungan penuh istrinya, Siti Walidah (Zaskia Adya Mecca), keluarga, dan beberapa orang murid setianya, Ahmad Dahlan terus berusaha menegakkan akidah, termasuk dengan bekerjasama dengan organisasi modern yang banyak dinilai merupakan kelompok kafir oleh lingkungannya.
